Paul R. Hee Maritime Scene Oil Painting on Canvas Signed and Framed
This striking maritime oil painting by Paul R. Hee (American 1927- 2011)) captures the timeless majesty of the age of sail with luminous detail and a romantic sensibility. Hee, a celebrated marine artist and member of the American Society of Marine Artists, was known for his ability to combine technical accuracy with evocative atmosphere, a skill honed during his years as a sailor and later as a naval sketch artist during World War II.
In this composition, two stately British tall ships, their sails partially unfurled, command the horizon against a dramatic coastal backdrop. The green waters ripple with movement, leading the eye toward a small rowboat in the foreground, where figures provide a poignant human scale to the grandeur of the vessels. Hee’s brushwork captures the interplay of wind, sea, and sky, while the subtle gradations of light suggest both the power and serenity of maritime life.
The painting reflects Hee’s hallmark style—rooted in the traditions of 19th-century marine masters yet infused with a modern romantic glow. With its meticulous rigging, historically resonant subject matter, and atmospheric treatment of clouds and water, the work exemplifies Hee’s devotion to preserving the heritage of seafaring through art.
Framed in a classic gilt frame, this original oil painting is not only a fine decorative statement but also a distinguished example of Paul R. Hee’s contribution to American marine painting.

About the artist :
Paul R. Hee ( American, 1927 - 2011) , a native of Long Island, spent his early years sailing the waters of Long Island Sound, Great South Bay and New York Harbor.
During World War II Paul served in the U.S. Navy, and devoted much of his spare time producing sketches. In 1970 he retired as Chief, Bureau of Construction, the State of New Jersey, which culminated with his appointment as Director of Construction of the Law Buildings constructed in Trenton. While performing his duties, he continued developing his natural artistic talents.
Mr. Hee’s oils express a luminous romantic approach to maritime art as found in many of the old masters. For inspiration he refers to his notes, sketches, sea literature and the historic ports of New England, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Norfolk and Charleston. Paul is considered one of the most versatile marine artists painting today. His paintings are sought after by discriminating collectors throughout the United States and abroad. Many are hanging in private collections, banks, public buildings and in shipboard staterooms.
Paul R. Hee presently resides on the beautiful beaches of Beaufort, NC where he paints and sails. He is a member of the American Society of Marine Artists.
