Early 20th Century Irish Donegal Arts & Crafts Carpet (3'6" x 11'2" -107 x 341 )
Antique Donegal – Arts & Crafts Hallway Runner Angora Ivory Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional piece from the Irish Donegal workshops exemplifies the late Arts & Crafts aesthetic, moving toward Art Nouveau sensibilities. The robust weave and distinctive coloration mark it as a highly collectible specimen among fine antique rugs.
The field presents a sophisticated angora ground, a soft, muted tone that places it firmly within the category of ivory color rugs. This neutral foundation beautifully offsets the highly saturated palette of the stylized motifs, featuring deep amethyst, moss green, and ochre yellow, characteristic of the vegetable dyes favored during this period.
Woven specifically for long, transitional spaces, the dimensions of this piece make it an ideal choice among hallway runner rugs. Its narrow profile and durable construction speak to its original purpose, providing both warmth and visual continuity in grand Edwardian or early 20th-century interiors where architectural lines demand precision.
The composition features a highly stylized, repeating pattern of abstracted flora and fauna, including charming depictions of birds and stylized palmettes, arranged in an appealing allover design. This dense, rhythmic arrangement ensures visual interest across the entire length, framed by a subtly geometric border that anchors the composition with characteristic Arts & Crafts simplicity.
