Bust of the Virgin Mary, Mater Dolorosa, in babbitt metal, signed Lanzirotti, late 19th century
Celebrate your faith under the protection of the Virgin Mary with this representation of the "Mater Dolorosa" (Mother of Sorrows), a trial in the life of the Virgin, where she saw her son, Jesus Christ, crucified and dying on the cross.
Created by the Italian sculptor Antonio Giovanni Lanzirotti (1839-1911), this babbitt metal bust exudes religious passion and Italian academicism from the late 19th century. Tearful and consumed by despair, the Virgin's expression is truly human: she who dedicated her life to her beliefs and her son, sees the dire destiny that awaited her: that of dying crucified on the cross.
The drapery, the Virgin's stature, straight and tall, her hollow, wide-open eyes\. Here, above all, Mary is represented as the mother, the woman, with human emotions in the face of tragedy. It represents grief, anger, and sadness, something we have all experienced when losing a loved one. It's a deeply emotional experience, one we can all relate to.
Signed on the side, this spelter bust is a rare work by the artist. While the Italian theme of the Christian religion is not one of his most popular subjects, it still reflects the academic style, a blend of the French and Italian schools that defines Lanzirotti's style.
Lovers of religious sculptures and devotional objects, don't wait any longer! Adopt this bust of the Virgin Mary Mater Dolorosa today.
