Clarke, British artist of the late 19th & early 20th centuries, "Portrait of a Lovely Young Woman - 1902", a bust portrait in profile of a raven haired beautiful young woman with a colorful shawl, 5 1/4" x 4 1/2", the portrait is painted on a light weight artist board, signed R. Clarke 1902 in the lower right corner front. CA number 3978, CA purchased summer 2025 from a Cornwall, UK auction house.
The painting has been cleaned and varnished, re-matted with White Museum matboard, Museum Glass, museum backing and 1/2" antiqued gold Newcomb Macklin moulding. The painting is under glass due to the fragile artist board it is painted upon.
Sadly, nothing is known of the artist. If R. Clarke was an amateur painter he/she was a very good one.
The images above do not do justice to the richness and vibrancy of this beautiful portrait that can be seen when viewed in person. This is a powerful portrait. See less
