Porta" scene of … Read more An original oil painting on wooden panel by Professor Oscar Ricciardi, Italian artist 1864-1935, "2 Mercato N. Porta" scene of the market in Naples, Italy with people wandering the street and shopping the open air market, the stalls mainly covered with canvas awnings, 5 3/4" x 9 1/8", signed Ricciardi in the lower left corner front, inscribed on reverse - "2 Mercato N. [Nolana, (Naples)] Porta, Prof. O. Ricciardi". CA number 3976, CA purchased summer 2025 from a regional British auction house. This painting was probably executed around the turn of the 20th century.
The painting has been cleaned and varnished in order to protect the paint film. It has been reframed in a 2" original Abe Munn antiqued gold Carlo Moratti style moulding.
He was a prolific impressionist painter of landscapes and genre scenes usually in small format works. His patrons were the Duke of Aosta and the Duke of Connaught. Major exhibitions were held in Naples, Milan and Turin.
A Sotheby's card from 1991 indicates this painting was appraised between 500-600 British Pounds and recommended to be insured for 800 British Pounds. See less
