Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (Germany 1683-1741), apothecary and botanist, is noted for his creation of the florilegium Phytanthoza iconographia between 1737 and 1745, an ambitious project which resulted in eight folio volumes. These rare and beautiful prints represent one of the most outstanding and innovative achievements in botanical illustration. The engraver, J.J. Haid printed many of the illustrations utilizing a new mezzotint (a type of engraving) technique pioneered by the Englishman, Kirkall. The captivating botanical depicted in our listing is one of the images from that series. The artist for the much of the work was the gifted Georg Dionysius Ehret (Germany 1708-1770), one of the foremost botanical artists of his day. There is some slight size variation from print to print since some margins were trimmed more than others due to different editions.
