A beautiful Japanese porcelain plate from the late Edo to early Meiji period, crafted in Arita, Saga Prefecture.
Dimensions: height 6 cm, diameter 30 cm
Executed in deep cobalt-blue sometsuke (underglaze blue), the plate features a lively hand-painted design of birds among pine branches (matsu) – a traditional symbol of resilience, harmony, and longevity. The bold brushwork and delicate shading create a refined play of light and movement, characteristic of the sophisticated Arita porcelain tradition of the 19th century.
An elegant wave motif runs along the rim, perfectly framing the composition.
The outer surface is also carefully decorated with a continuous karakusa (arabesque) pattern in cobalt blue – a classic Japanese motif symbolizing eternal growth and connection. The slightly raised footring shows natural traces of sand firing, typical of authentic, hand-crafted Arita ware.
A remarkable example of Japanese porcelain that is both historically significant and visually captivating – a timeless interior accent, perfect as a decorative plate on a table, wall, or in a display cabinet.
A harmonious combination of craftsmanship, symbolism, and quiet beauty, in which the spirit of old Japan remains beautifully alive.
