Older Ashanti / Asante tribal stool or support, mid 20th Century, hand-carved hard wood in the form of a nicely proportioned younger elephant. Old patination and base detail carving. This is one piece of amazing woodman-ship. Stools of this type, known as esona dwa.
The stool is in great condition. A broad, gently curved seat rests atop the elephant's back, while the entire surface shows a rich, lustrous patina that reflects both age and use, bringing out the deep tones of the hardwood.
These stools can be used as foot rests, bathroom or bedroom stools, in sunrooms or even as a side table. Great decorative and useable piece with cultural African history. It is unusual to find these stools shaped as elephants - normally they tend to be geometric in style.
