19th-century majolica wall pocket in the form of leaves with vining pink blossoms and branching handles and a bow-shaped hanger. This beautifully relief-molded and hand-painted piece captures the naturalistic style associated with fine Victorian majolica pottery and is reminiscent of George Jones’ intricate botanical designs. A rare design, the age and origin of this unmarked piece is unknown.
The piece measures 11" high x 8-3/4" wide x 4" deep and displays rich majolica colors — greens, browns, and pinks — with a lightly glossed glaze highlighting its raised textures.
There are a few chips on flower petals and vines. One of the petals might have had a previous glue repair but it is hard to tell. Please zoom in on photos for a complete description of condition. The interior shows dirt and staining from prior use as a floral holder; it has been gently cleaned, but residue remains. Additional cleaning may improve it further.
This is a fine decorative example of naturalistic pottery that displays beautifully in a Victorian, cottage, or botanical-inspired setting.
