They depict inhabitants of Van Diemen’s Land (present-day Tasmania), rendered with striking detail and sensitivity. Brodtmann’s work is known for its precise draftsmanship and lifelike quality, qualities that are immediately evident in these plates. Brodtmann (1787–1862) was renowned for his series of ethnographic and zoological lithographs, produced at a time when lithography was still a relatively new printing technique. His ability to capture both anatomical accuracy and artistic presence made his works highly sought after. These prints belong to his larger ethnographic studies, which introduced European audiences to the appearance and attire of peoples from distant parts of the world. The present lithographs stand out not only for their historic significance but also for the richness of their composition. Each figure is shown draped in traditional furs and cloaks, with finely shaded features and distinctive expressions. The plates convey both individuality and a careful ethnographic study, making them important documents in the European understanding of indigenous Tasmanian peoples during the early 19th century. The works were printed on high-quality, thick, matt paper, typical of Brodtmann’s best productions. Their large size and sharp impressions allow the fine lines of the lithography to remain vivid, even nearly two centuries after their creation. Collectors of early ethnographic illustration, historical portraiture, and 19th-century printmaking will find these works particularly appealing, both as artifacts of cultural history and as decorative pieces of refined beauty. Condition report: Both lithographs are well preserved, with some expected light age toning and minor spotting in the margins. Paper remains strong and the impressions sharp. Slight waterstaining visible in the lower margin of one plate, not affecting the image. Borders a bit rough, but the framing area is overall very good for works of this age. Framing tips: These prints would display beautifully in simple dark wood or black frames with a warm off-white or cream mat. The neutral mount will highlight the detailed linework, while the darker frame provides contrast and gravitas. Hung as a pair, they would make an elegant ethnographic statement in a library, study, or gallery wall. Technique: Lithograph Maker: Karl Joseph Brodtmann, Switzerland, 1827 See less
