In Japanese culture the lion is also a symbol of strength and power, appearing in traditional arts like the shishi-mai (lion dance) and kabuki theater. In Okinawa, a related creature called the Shisa performs a similar guardian function. This large and amazingly fine silk needlework picture would grace a wall of distinction in Meiji Japan.
