It is a high fired pottery, which denotes quality, and dates to the Showa period 1926-1989. The pottery is known for its rustic simplicity and handcrafted decoration, often featuring geometric patterns created with tools like a comb-shaped tool (kushi-daki) or a scraping tool (tobikanna). The plate's design, with its circular, ridged pattern and floral motif, is characteristic of this style. Ontayaki pottery remained virtually unknown until it was "rediscoved" in 1931 by Yanagi Soetsu, the founder of the Japanese Folk Crafts movement. The world fame came when the Bernard Leach came and stayed at Onta for about a month, learning the skills and making pottery. See less
