19th Century Palatial Japanese Meiji Period Patinated Bronze Hand Chiseled Incense Burner.
A koro or censer originating for Japan during the Meiji period. The censer has an urn shape with a large, domed lid, which is topped with a finial, in the form of a mythological creature. It comes a part in 3 pieces and is made of bronze with a dark patina. The body of the urn is decorated with intricate bas-relief panels. The central panel appears to depict figures in a landscape or mythological scene. The handles are also highly decorative, and the base is adorned with detailed patterns. These incense burners were highly valued for their craftsmanship and were often used in temples or for ceremonial purposes.
The artist’s signature is cast into the inner wall of the vase, near the base.
