From the designer Georges Briard, and from the Forbidden Fruit collection, a White Opal glass serving tray with wood and brass handles, circa 1960s.
Georges Briard produced his Forbidden Fruit collection from 1957-1967. The glassware and serving pieces are considered Mid-Century Modern and feature a gilded apple design. A square tray with teak handles tipped with brass fittings, in an opaque white glass called White Opal, the tray shows an apple in blue and green with bold gilded accents. A gilded border with blue and green squares to eat corner.
The tray is molded with upturned rims for holding canapés or crudités in place while serving.
Georges Briard created award-winning designs for items including glasses, trays, coffeepots and dishes in materials like glass, ceramics, metal, wood, and gold-plated serveware. His serveware was especially popular from the 1950s to ’70s. It was produced by companies including Culver, Pfaltzgraff and Medina Glass and sold at high-end department stores like Neiman Marcus and Bonwit Teller. Briard’s designs were found in the homes of the most fashionable hosts of the mid-century. Today, they are highly prized by collectors.
