Fantastic pair of early edition Clam Chairs, originally designed in 1944 in Copenhagen for Madsen & Schubell.
For decades, the true authorship of this celebrated chair was surrounded by mystery, long attributed to Philip Arctander. However, recent research has since confirmed Arnold Madsen as the genuine designer. Together with Henry Schubell, Madsen created what would become one of the most beloved pieces in Scandinavian design history. Known in Denmark as “Musling stolen” (the Clam Chair), this model marked the beginning of a long and successful collaboration between Madsen and Schubell.
This particular pair is an early example from the 1940s. Early editions can be identified by their slightly smaller proportions and lower backrest, details that emphasize the sculptural and intimate quality of the design.
Both chairs have been reupholstered in luxurious thick curly shearling, enhancing their inviting form and exceptional comfort. The creamy tone of the natural sheepskin contrasts beautifully with the warm wooden frame and armrests, creating a harmonious balance of texture and warmth.
A timeless and cozy addition to any interior, these early Clam Chairs breathe the essence of Danish craftsmanship and modernist elegance. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
from
misattribution
