The canvases, in particular, fully reflect the pictorial style of the Flemish artist Peter van den Velde the Elder (Antwerp 1634-1707), a renowned painter specializing in seascapes with port cities and fortresses.

They depict, respectively, a port city and a fortress perched overlooking the sea. Both depict small, animated figures, immediately reminiscent of the Mediterranean coast, although there are inevitable references to Northern European elements, including a small mill and the vessels typical of the Dutch fleet.
