This rare lounge chair was designed by Eugen Schmidt for the German manufacturer Soloform during the 1960s. This exceptional chair embodies the essence of post-war modernism – a fusion of sculptural form, superior craftsmanship, and timeless elegance. The frame is crafted from bent, lacquered wood and seamlessly blends with the armrests, creating an elegant setting for the quilted seat. The seat and backrest are upholstered in high-quality olive green leather, which beautifully contrasts with the warm tone of the wood. The armchair rests on a chrome-plated metal leg with a swivel mechanism, making it both practical and dynamic. Perfect for an office, living room or relaxation space. Comfortable, elegant, and clearly inspired by mid-century modern aesthetics, it combines functionality with subtle design expression. The chair is a prime example of modernist design, where functionality meets the poetics of form. This piece of furniture not only embodies the spirit of the 1960s — a decade of formal boldness, innovation, and the search for harmony between human and object — but also remains remarkably relevant in contemporary interiors. Its modernist purity and masculine elegance are perfect for both vintage spaces and modern Scandinavian designs.
Eugen Schmidt is a German architect who designed several design icons for Soloform in the 1960s. He was very involved in creating projects for the company, which he later took over as Eugen Schmidt Soloform. He also designed furniture for the German Chancellor's bungalow.
The armchair is in original vintage condition. It shows signs of age-related wear, natural patina, and cracks in the leather. The seat height is 40 cm.
