A beautifully rendered 1951 vintage oil portrait painting titled “The Torn Hat”, signed Michael.
Thomas Sully (1783–1872).
The original composition by Sully portrays his nine-year-old son, Thomas Wilcocks Sully, wearing a torn straw hat—an iconic representation of early American portraiture admired for its warmth, naturalism, and mastery of light and shadow. This later interpretation captures the same expressive innocence and painterly technique, blending fine brushwork and rich tonal layering.
