A charming, characteristically light-handed watercolor by Ohio artist Will Rannells, celebrated for his whimsical portrayals of animals. Two fluffy white cats cavort around a striped hatbox tied with a green ribbon; the forms are laid in with quick graphite and washed with transparent color, leaving passages of reserve that give the scene its airy, spontaneous feel.

Notes: Rannells worked primarily in and around Columbus, Ohio, and is best known for endearing animal subjects in watercolor and illustration. The present sheet bears a Columbus framer’s label, supporting an Ohio provenance. See less
