Vintage Murano Glass Aquarium - Iridato - VERY RARE!!! - A.Ve.M. 1960s?
-For those of you familiar with the older Murano aquariums, you will know that this is a special piece. There is no doubt this is Murano and my thoughts on it being vintage AVEM are based on the colors and shapes of the fish, the 3 layers with irregular outside edges, and the use of an iridescent finish (I and other collectors in my groups have never seen this on an aquarium before, but they used it on other pieces). I have also had fellow collectors concur it was likely made by Arte Vertraria Muranese.
By the looks on their fishy faces with the one having his eyes closed and the other very wide open...you can just tell that they are sharing quite the sordid fish tale :)
-Dimensions: 8.3" x 4.5" x 2" Weight: 4.4#
-There is not much to note for damage, other than bottom scratching which is consistent with age along with a hint of label that is no longer recognizable. But, I do want to note that in the making of it, the iridescent finish was not applied consistently everywhere. Under standard indoor lighting it is not very noticeable, but under bright sunlight at the right angle it is. The last three pics are taken by laying it down in bright sunlight so you can see it at it's most noticeable.
On what I call the front side, the iridescence does not extend all the way to the bottom right corner. On the back, it is a little thicker and on the right there are what I believe to be furnace spots from the high heat. I am not surprised since I can only imagine it would be difficult to apply on a piece of this size. Here is what the "muranoglass" website states regarding how it is done (the article can be found by looking up "Understanding the various Murano Glass manufacturing techniques")
•Iridescence is an effect where the light reflected from the surface of the glass decomposes into the colors of the rainbow. It is obtained by exposing the work in progress, on the end of the blow-pipe to the vapours produced by burning quick-melting salts of tin, titanium or other metals.

*Note that essentially all of my glass is vintage and may have the slightest of wear/signs of age that are hard to pinpoint. If there is anything that stands out, I try my best to describe and photo it. For more fragile and delicate pieces I will double box and/or add some further reinforcement.
