Original Art Deco Bronze Neoclassical Myth Sculpture “Diana the Huntress” Signed R. Henn – Marble Base, c.1920s
Subject & Medium:
This magnificent original Art Deco bronze sculpture features Diana, the powerful Roman goddess of the hunt, moon, and wilderness. She is captured mid-motion, kneeling in full concentration, bow drawn and arrow ready to release — a dynamic moment that embodies divine poise and energy. Diana’s form expresses both athleticism and grace, conveying independence, purity, and mythological strength.
The sculpture is finely cast in solid bronze with a dark, rich patina, highlighted by golden undertones that enhance its dimensionality and depth. It is mounted on a smooth, polished black marble base that provides elegant contrast and structural balance. This work is a striking harmony of myth, movement, and classical beauty, ideal for collectors of fine art and antique sculpture.
Composition & Technique:
Executed in the elegant and bold Art Deco style of the early 20th century, this piece combines stylized realism with classical influence. Diana’s figure flows with confident contours and lifelike muscular definition, creating a sense of suspended movement. Her expression is focused and serene, emphasizing the sculpture’s narrative intensity.
The sculptor’s technique is meticulous — every detail, from the stretched tension of the bow to the soft draping of Diana’s garment, is carefully articulated. The deep brown patinated bronze complements the sleek black marble plinth, giving the piece both warmth and sophistication. This sculpture is an outstanding representation of Art Deco design, combining clean lines, dynamic posture, and mythological storytelling.
About the Artist (Sculptor):
Rudolph Henn (1880–1955) was born in Olsbrücken, Germany. He studied figural sculpture at the Academy of Applied Arts in Munich before serving in the German army during World War I. In the late 1920s, Henn emigrated to the United States with his family and settled in New York, where he worked on architectural and design projects with Heinz Warnecke and Theodore Barbarossa.
His work is known for blending classical themes with early modern expression. Henn’s mastery of form and gesture is evident in this piece, which reflects his deep understanding of human anatomy, classical narrative, and contemporary design. His bronzes are now sought after by collectors and institutions alike.
Signed:
The sculpture is clearly signed “R. HENN” on the base, ensuring authenticity and providing a valuable connection to the artist’s catalogue of work.
Dimensions:
The sculpture measures 32.5 cm in height, with a total depth of 31 cm. The base is 11 cm wide and 21 cm in length. The overall weight is approximately 8 kilograms, giving it a solid, substantial presence.
Provenance:
This exceptional historic work was previously sold at Christie’s South Kensington as part of their “20th Century European Sculpture” auction held on 13 May 2004. It has also been exhibited at the renowned Lord Hill Museum in the UK and professionally curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD, specialists in museum-grade fine art and sculpture. A high-end auction label remains attached to the underside of the base, further affirming its provenance and collectibility.
