Artist Biography
Max Peinlich was an early 20th-century Austrian-American sculptor known for creating bronze bookends, plaques, and other decorative pieces. After training in Vienna and Paris, Peinlich immigrated to the United States and worked with the Griffoul Foundry in Newark, New Jersey. He later designed pieces for high-end American retailers such as Tiffany & Co.
Exhibition: He received early recognition at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis for a display case he designed.
Notable subjects: Peinlich's work often focused on historic American and Egyptian Revival themes.
Abraham Lincoln: He created a notable plaque featuring a bust of Abraham Lincoln to commemorate his birth centennial in 1909.
Native American: He produced solid bronze bookends depicting a Native American chief with a feathered headdress.
Egyptian Revival: He designed "Egyptian Hand Maidens" bookends during the popular Egyptian Revival movement of the 1910s.
Figural: He also created figural pieces, including bookends featuring a young girl and a cupid.
