1930s Catalina Tile‑Inset Side Table, 4 Tile No. 255 — Spanish Revival / Mission Style
This rare 1930s California side table is a high-end example of Spanish Colonial Revival or Mission style furniture, handcrafted during the height of the state’s decorative arts movement. It features four original, hand-glazed Catalina ceramic tiles inset into the top—each showcasing vibrant turquoise, orange, and green arabesque and geometric motifs inspired by Spanish and Moorish design traditions. The underside of the table is marked No. 255, indicating authentic Catalina Tile Company production.
The table’s hardwood frame—likely oak—is richly ornamented with heavy carved sides and deep-relief apron motifs that reflect Spanish Baroque influences. These include stylized petal leaves, scrollwork, and interlaced geometric patterns, sculpted in voluminous relief that adds both visual drama and structural substance to the piece. The carvings are meticulously hand-chiseled, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship.
Supporting the piece are elaborately turned legs with baluster and bulbous forms, detailed with faceted edges, and ending in subtle fluting that tapers toward the feet. The compact form, combined with dense hardwood construction, gives the table a surprisingly weighty presence—estimated between 25–40 pounds.
Together, the earthy, sculpted woodwork and the vibrant Moorish-tinged tile inlay create a richly layered aesthetic that evokes the romanticized California ranchero spirit so emblematic of the 1920s–30s Spanish Revival boom.
· Dimensions: 19.5 in tall × 22 in wide × 17.5 in deep
· Condition: Good vintage condition. Tiles remain intact with light wear and minimal crazing; wood retains its original finish with surface imperfections consistent with age.
