A compact, vigorously modelled bronze of a crouching nude at her ablutions, this sculpture corresponds to Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s sculptural theme … Read more A compact, vigorously modelled bronze of a crouching nude at her ablutions, this sculpture corresponds to Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s sculptural theme of the washer woman (La Laveuse), developed late in his career in collaboration with the young sculptor Richard Guino (under the auspices of the dealer Ambroise Vollard, 1913–1917). The figure’s pose—heels tucked beneath the haunches, torso pitched forward, arms extended to wring a cloth over a rocky support—matches published examples from the Renoir/Guino corpus and carries the painter’s characteristic concern with rounded, swelling forms translated into clay and then bronze. The vigorously faceted surface, with its “thumbed” planes that catch light across back, shoulder, thigh and forearm, is absolutely consistent with the hand-modelled originals. On the ground line at the left side appears an incised “Renoir” signature, a convention used on authorized bronzes from this group. There is also an unidentified foundry mark to the corner of the bronze. This piece is likely produced in the mid 20th century.
