Antique 18th century German Hoechst porcelain jardinaire, cachepot or bottle cooler. Hand painted with bouquets of flowers including roses and parrot tulips. The rim in relief molded basketweave with exuberant foliate Rococo handles at each side. Makes a wonderful centerpiece vase for flowers. Measures 9 3/4" across over handles x 7 1/2" diameter x 7 1/2" tall. Good condition - wear to gilding at the rim.
Hoechst (also spelled Höchst) porcelain is a distinguished German porcelain, founded in 1746 and known for its intricate modeling and expert painting. The original manufactory operated in the town of Höchst, near Frankfurt, and is one of Germany's oldest porcelain producers. Authentic Hoechst porcelain is marked with the "Mainz wheel," a six-spoke wheel derived from the coat of arms of the Archbishop-Elector of Mainz. This mark can appear in blue or purple underglaze on 18th-century pieces.
