Peruvian ceramic artist Apolinario "Polo" Ramirez (born 1966) molds and sculpts clay vases and pots using a pre-Columbian ceramic technique called "Rock and Paddle," a process that takes seven days to create one vessel.
As one of only a few master craftsmen of this ancient technique, Ramirez uses only his hands and bare feet, along with egg-shaped rocks and wooden paddles, to sculpt his one-of-a-kind pieces. He then fires them using wood.
This vessel is burnished with soft tan and brown color for a smooth finish. The hand-textured bottom portion features a rich, chocolate-brown hue. This piece stands at about 9" tall and 8" wide and is in good condition, with some minor abrasions and shelf wear.
