Adrian Bellew, a gambler, and a bit of a scoundrel, finds himself quite broke after he has lost the last of his inheritance. He decides to go to a ball anyways when he sees Lady Betty Pole arrive. He decides that he must marry wealth, or else leave his beloved London and sail off to America, where he must actually find a job and work. Betty sees through his scheme and sends him off. The gentle Eve Bramley is whom he really does love, and therefore cannot propose to due to need of money. When he finds he is getting nowhere with his plan of marriage, he leaves the party in frustration, and goes home to pack. He will sail to America. Later in America with a steady job in labor he receives a letter from Africa from a man to whom he had given money, back in the day when he had some, to set up a gold mining business. The man promised him half if he struck it rich. The man did strike it rich, and was now informing Adrian that he was rich as well. We later find him back in his beloved London, a changed man.

Bettina Riddle (1874 – 1957), also known as Betsey Riddle, and later as Baroness von Hutten, was an American-born novelist, specializing in historical fiction. As an American in England during World War I, she was arrested and fined as an enemy alien, because she had a German ex-husband.

Harrison Fisher (1877 – 1934) was an American illustrator. He was known for the beautiful women he painted, who were overwhelmingly rosy-cheeked, long-limbed, alone, and elegant. The vast and lavishly decorated hats that adorned their heads also became a signature aspect of his design. He joined a legion of other notable illustrators who specialized in the portrayal of glamorous American women, such as Coles Phillips and Charles Dana Gibson. Much like these other illustrators, Fisher was creating a romantic ideal of how women ought to be, but with his “American Girl” and “College Girl” paintings he also wove independence, strength, and intelligence into that romantic narrative.
