Monumental Gucci Silver-Plated Boar Motif Stirrup Cup, Designed by Paolo Gucci, Italy, circa 1970s
Height: 7.75" Diameter: 4.25" Interior Depth: 5"
A striking and substantial silver-plated stirrup cup by Gucci, designed by Paolo Gucci, featuring a finely cast and chased boar’s head. This sculptural form is reversible—designed to rest either upright on the rim of the cup or inverted on the boar’s head, as was traditional for stirrup cups offered at hunts before or after the ride.
The cup itself is generously proportioned with a bright, mirror-polished surface that is both reflective and highly tactile. The base is an exquisitely detailed boar’s head, modeled with deep textural fur, lifelike eyes, flared nostrils, and an open mouth, exemplifying Paolo Gucci’s flair for bold, sculptural design. On one side of the collar, the piece is engraved "GUCCI," and on the opposite, "ITALY"—signifying both the maker and origin.
The stirrup cup form, historically associated with 18th- and 19th-century British and Continental hunting traditions, was revived in the 20th century by luxury houses such as Gucci, often in whimsical or powerful animal forms. This monumental example stands out for its size, weight, and artistry, making it an impressive barware statement piece or a distinctive addition to a Gucci collection.
Designer Note: Paolo Gucci, grandson of founder Guccio Gucci, was known for his daring, theatrical approach to design during his tenure with the company in the 1970s–80s. His creations often pushed the boundaries of traditional luxury, incorporating bold forms, intricate detailing, and unexpected references to history, nature, and sport. Today, Paolo Gucci–designed objects are highly sought after by collectors for their distinctive aesthetic and connection to a pivotal era in Gucci’s history.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition, bright and shiny surface with minimal signs of use; hard to photograph due to the highly reflective surface.
Provenance: Palm Beach Private Collection.
