Pair of Neoclassical Louis XVI-Style Ormolu Candlesticks, Now as Lamps
With Laurel Swags and Acanthus Bases, Late 19th Century
A finely cast and richly detailed pair of French Louis XVI-style candlesticks, now adapted as table lamps, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Executed in gilt bronze (ormolu), each piece exemplifies the neoclassical aesthetic with its balanced proportions, crisp detailing, and iconography drawn from antiquity.
The central form is an urn-shaped shaft intricately chased with fluting and vertical anthemion motifs, flanked by suspended laurel garlands—a symbol of victory and honor—draped from acanthus clasps in high relief. The garlands are delicately bound with berried ties, and the urns taper into lotus-cup knop supports above domed, spreading bases.
Each circular base is encircled by a continuous band of interwoven holly leaves and berries, bordered with a classical beaded and petal-molded rim. The upper collar and bobeche are similarly adorned with acanthus and gadrooning, reinforcing the unity of the neoclassical language throughout the design.
The surface retains its original warm ormolu finish with minor age-appropriate oxidation and wear, particularly visible on the lower base rims, which adds depth and authenticity to the patina. Both pieces have been wired in the French manner, with the cord rising externally from the base—a common technique that preserves the integrity of the original bronze casting. The lamps retain their original candle-form sleeves and hardware and are structurally sound, ready for use or rewiring to meet modern standards.
Dimensions:
Base diameter: 6.5 inches
Height to candlestick top: 12 inches
Height to socket: 18 inches
Condition:
Excellent antique condition with age-appropriate wear to the gilding. The wiring is functional but could be updated. One bobeche shows a minor chip to the candle sleeve.
These elegant lamps would be at home in both classical and transitional interiors, ideal for flanking a mantel, adorning a console, or lending historic gravitas to a writing desk. Their restrained opulence and archetypal neoclassical form evoke the refined taste of the Louis XVI period, while the scale makes them highly versatile for contemporary use.
