Italian Minimalist Bench or Coffee Table Attributed to Giuseppe Rivadossi Studio, Stainless Steel and Brass, 1980s
Note: The lead image shows a shadow cast from the wall; this is not a mark on the surface. The piece has a consistent, even color and finish throughout.
A rare and refined minimalist bench or coffee table attributed to the studio of Giuseppe Rivadossi, one of Italy’s most celebrated artist-designers, renowned for sculptural furniture rooted in material purity and architectural clarity. Dating to the 1980s, this example reflects a transitional moment in Rivadossi’s work, where traditional craftsmanship meets elemental industrial design.
The rectilinear top is clad in brushed stainless steel and accented at each end with flush-mounted brass inlay plaques — a subtle yet luxurious detail that softens the austerity of the form. Supported by four precisely tapered metal legs that screw securely into the underside, the design allows for easy removal of the legs for transport or storage. The exposed underside construction reveals a solid wood frame with brass edge banding, embodying the Arte Povera ethos of letting the process and materials speak for themselves.
With its stripped-down geometry, natural patina, and refined proportions, this piece captures the tactile, contemplative, and poetic spirit of Rivadossi’s studio work. It functions equally well as a sculptural entry bench, low coffee table, or centerpiece in an architecturally driven interior.
