Monumental Forged Iron and Glass Serpent Coffee Table in the Manner of Diego Giacometti, France, Late 20th Century
Consisting of two pieces: the bronzed forged iron base and monumental glass top

Glass top: 82.5" W x 47" D
Approx. 200+ lbs
A monumental and sculpturally expressive forged iron coffee table with a thick inset glass top, inspired by the poetic and myth-infused designs of Diego Giacometti. Handcrafted in France in the late 20th century, the table's commanding scale and lyrical detailing evoke the timeless elegance and symbolic depth of the Giacometti brothers’ atelier creations.
The forged iron base features four baluster-form legs joined by flat strap stretchers and reinforced with diagonals, creating a visual rhythm of architectural restraint. At the heart of the structure, an X-form stretcher terminates in a central forged knot—an emblem of tension, unity, and Giacometti’s fascination with elemental forms.
One stretcher transforms into a stylized iron serpent, its body rendered in a sinuous helical twist. The serpent—an ancient symbol of transformation, knowledge, and eternity—appears throughout art history and mythology and was a recurring motif in Diego Giacometti’s bestiary. Here, it serves not only as a sculptural flourish but also as a profound emblem of natural force and timeless cycle—infusing the piece with allegorical resonance.
The iron surface is finished with a richly toned bronzed patina, emphasizing the hand-hammered texture and lending the piece a timeless, sculptural presence. The thick glass top appears to float above the base, offering a clear window into the symbolic and structural complexity beneath. Weighing over 200 pounds, the piece possesses true physical presence and visual gravity.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Minor surface wear to iron consistent with age and intent of design. The glass top is in fine condition with minimal wear. Structurally sound and visually stunning.
Provenance: Private Palm Beach collection.
