Pair of Tiffany Studios Style Two-Light Bronze Theater Sconces
United States, circa 1910–1925
This finely cast and chased pair of two-light wall sconces represents the height of American decorative lighting design during the transitional era from gas to electric illumination in the early 20th century. Executed in solid bronze with a mellow, original patina, each fixture features a circular backplate framed by an acanthus-leaf border and delicate beading, issuing a horizontal arm with boldly reeded and fluted baluster forms. The central square section is enriched on all four faces with low-relief interlaced vine and stylized flower-head motifs, a decorative language closely associated with Tiffany Studios and other elite New York lighting makers such as Edward F. Caldwell & Co.
The compact but substantial design reflects the needs of the early electrified theatre and public interior, where wall-mounted fixtures replaced or adapted existing gasoliers to accommodate incandescent bulbs. This period—roughly 1895 to the early 1920s—saw a proliferation of opulent lighting in performance spaces, hotels, and luxury residences, with bronze chosen for its durability, ability to hold fine surface detail, and its capacity to develop a rich patina. These sconces retain their original bronze finish and have been sensitively rewired for modern use.
Stamped SL 2 and 30 on the reverse of one backplate, they may originate from a premier New York manufacturer. While unsigned, the crisp casting, proportion, and ornament are on par with Tiffany Studios’ architectural commissions for theaters and public buildings, as well as the high-grade custom work of Caldwell and the Sterling Bronze Company.
Versatile in mounting, the sconces can be hung vertically or horizontally, fitted with standard base bulbs, and accommodate a range of glass globes or fabric shades depending on the desired presentation.
