A collection of two fragments of antique pre-Columbia textile panel from Chimu or Chancay culture located in Central and Northern Coast of nowadays Peru. The panels were presented in complimentary mat and frame which makes them a wonderful pair for a discerning collector. Chancay culture thrived in the late Intermediate period/ late Horizon circa 1000-1470 CE until it was incorporated by Chimu Culture on the further northern coast. Chimu culture was later conquered by Inca Empire in late 15th century.
Both panels appear to be part of a large shawl/mantle or tunic indicated by its size and the presence of bottom fringes. Woven from fine wool and camelid fibers of multiple colors, both panel features zoomorphic motif and concentric geometrical patterns. One panel has tassels on the lower end while the other has two darker plain weaving bands on top and bottom end with the main motifs sandwiched in between. The two frames measure 20.75" x 29.25" x 1" and 24" x 29" x 1" respectively.
The textile is beautifully float mounted within the same mat of complimentary colors and presented in a lovely dark wood frame with oil rubbed finish.
Provenance: From an American collection collected in Peru in 1970s. Hence by descent.
Reference: For reading on the bird motifs in Chancay textile art, see page 141-183 of the book "Ancient Peruvian Textile" by F. Anton.
