Duchess of Brittany in her own right, she became queen consort of France twice, through her marriages to Charles VIII and later to Louis XII. Her unions symbolized the eventual political union of Brittany with the French crown, making her a key figure in the shaping of France as a unified kingdom. The print shows Anne in a richly patterned golden gown with wide sleeves lined in ermine, a symbol of Brittany. Beneath her robe appears a deep crimson underskirt, adding a striking note of color. Her attire is adorned with jewels around the neckline and a finely detailed headpiece, while her composed gesture underscores both dignity and nobility. This costume is characteristic of late 15th–early 16th century French court fashion, blending opulence with symbolic heraldic detail. The engraving originates from the celebrated series Galerie Française de Femmes Célèbres (Paris, 1827), drawn by Louis-Marie Lanté and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine. The present example is a ca. 1900 reissue, when these historically significant costume portraits were reprinted to meet the rising interest in history, fashion, and genealogy. Condition report: Excellent impression with vivid hand-coloring. Margins with only light age-toning, blank verso, and a well-preserved platemark. Framing tips: To highlight the golden tones and regal crimson, a dark wood or gilt frame is ideal, combined with a soft cream mount. Double matting with a thin burgundy or deep green inner border will enhance the richness of the costume, making this portrait of Anne de Bretagne a centerpiece in any historical or decorative collection. Technique: Hand-colored engraving (later impression, ca. 1900) Maker: After Louis-Marie Lanté (artist) and Georges Jacques Gatine (engraver), Paris, 1827 See less
