Known for her intellect, diplomacy, and patronage of the arts, marguerite was a key figure of the french renaissance and an influential woman in religious and literary circles. She married charles iv, duke of alençon, and later henri ii of navarre, becoming the grandmother of king henri iv of france. In this engraving, marguerite is shown wearing a richly detailed gown of black with a white brocade front panel, trimmed with gold and jeweled embroidery. Her puffed sleeves, interlaced with ribbons, demonstrate the luxurious court fashion of the early 16th century. Around her neck is a delicate ruff, while a jeweled headdress and pearl accents enhance her regal bearing. She holds a glove delicately in her hand, a symbol of refinement and aristocratic demeanor. The image derives from the famous french series galerie française de femmes célèbres (paris, 1827), drawn by louis-marie lanté and engraved by georges jacques gatine. The series presented portraits of notable women from french history, blending costume study with biographical importance. The present sheet is a later impression from around 1900, reflecting the era’s renewed interest in historical fashion and noble portraiture. Condition report: excellent preservation with rich hand-coloring, clear impression, and wide margins. Light toning consistent with age, blank verso, and a visible platemark. Framing tips: this engraving will present beautifully in a gilt renaissance-style frame with a cream or ivory mat, highlighting the elegance of the black and white contrast in the gown. For a more dramatic presentation, a black wood frame with double matting—ivory with a thin burgundy line—will emphasize the regal details and jewel tones. Technique: hand-colored engraving (later edition, ca. 1900) maker: after louis-marie lanté (artist) and georges jacques gatine (engraver), paris, 1827 See less
