The original series was created by louis-marie lanté (artist) and georges jacques gatine (engraver) and later republished at the turn of the 20th century for collectors of historical costume and portraiture. Marie d’anjou is shown in regal attire befitting her role as queen consort. She wears a long black gown trimmed throughout with ermine fur, the symbol of royal dignity. A deep red underbodice adds richness to the ensemble, cinched at the waist with a gold belt. Around her shoulders, the fur-lined cloak falls in heavy folds. She holds gloves delicately in one hand, a traditional symbol of nobility. Her tall black hennin, adorned with golden decoration, rises above her veil, adding height and elegance to her appearance. Her jewelry includes a gold necklace with gemstones, further emphasizing her royal status. Marie d’anjou married charles vii of france in 1422 and became queen at a pivotal moment in the hundred years’ war. She was the mother of louis xi and part of the influential house of anjou, which played a key role in both french and european dynastic politics. Her presence in this series underscores her importance as a queen who supported charles vii during a turbulent reign that saw the turning point of french fortunes against england, aided by figures like joan of arc. Though this engraving is from the ca. 1900 reissue, it retains the careful hand coloring and fine engraving detail of the original 1827 series. These portraits remain highly collectible for their artistry, historical interest, and decorative appeal. Condition report: very good condition with clean sheet and vivid coloring. Minor marginal toning consistent with age. Blank verso. Framing tips: a gilt or dark wood frame with an ivory mat will bring out the dignity of the ermine-trimmed gown. A thin red or gold inner line in the mount can echo the costume’s details and add refinement. Technique: hand-colored engraving (later impression, ca. 1900) maker: after georges jacques gatine (engraver) and louis-marie lanté (artist), original paris edition 1827 See less
