This portrait was published around 1900 after the original plate issued in Paris in 1827 as part of the Galerie Française de Femmes Célèbres. The series was designed by Louis-Marie Lanté and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, bringing together finely rendered images of notable French women across the centuries. Marguerite is shown in a blue gown with a closely laced bodice and long, flowing skirt, typical of early 14th-century French noble dress. A white linen headdress and veil frame her face, emphasizing simplicity and modesty. Over her gown she wears a long brown mantle lined with a patterned fabric, clasped at the front and draping elegantly to the ground. The subdued tones of her attire convey dignity, while the fine hand coloring brings depth to the rich blue fabric. The Beaujeu family played an important role in the French medieval aristocracy, closely tied to the royal house of Bourbon. The inclusion of Marguerite in this celebrated portrait series reflects her position within France’s noble lineage and highlights the role of aristocratic women in shaping dynastic politics. These ca. 1900 impressions of the original 1827 engravings were produced at a time when historical costume studies enjoyed renewed popularity, particularly among collectors and scholars. The combination of historical accuracy, decorative appeal, and fine hand-coloring continues to make these prints highly desirable today. Condition report: Very good condition. Clean impression with well-preserved coloring. Light toning in the margins and minimal signs of age outside the image. Blank verso. Framing tips: Best displayed in a gilt or walnut frame with a cream or ivory mat. A soft blue inner mount line can enhance the gown’s vivid color, while a darker surround will emphasize the engraved detail. Technique: Hand-colored engraving (later impression, ca. 1900) Maker: After Georges Jacques Gatine (engraver) and Louis-Marie Lanté (artist), original Paris edition 1827 See less
