René d’Anjou was a significant patron of the arts during the 15th century, remembered for his refined courtly culture and encouragement of poetry, painting, and chivalric traditions. The lady is shown in profile, wearing a sumptuous crimson gown with wide flowing sleeves and a long white underdress trimmed with gold motifs. Her attire is crowned by an elaborate steeple headdress (hennin), with a long white veil cascading dramatically down her back, a distinctive fashion statement of noblewomen in late medieval France. She holds a small book, symbolizing both learning and piety, reflecting the cultivated life at René’s court. Originally part of the celebrated costume series Galerie Française de Femmes Célèbres (Paris, 1827), designed by Louis-Marie Lanté and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, the present impression comes from the ca. 1900 reissue, which reintroduced these famous depictions to a new audience. The hand-coloring is particularly vivid, with deep crimson tones and subtle highlights that bring the rich fabric folds to life. Condition report: Good condition with vibrant hand-coloring. A faint spot in the lower left margin, not affecting the image, and light toning consistent with age. Wide margins, blank verso. Framing tips: A cream or ivory mat will complement the crimson gown and enhance the delicate veil, while a gilt or dark wood frame will emphasize the elegance and historical depth of the image. A double mat with a fine burgundy line could highlight the richness of the costume. Technique: Hand-colored engraving (later impression, ca. 1900) Maker: After Louis-Marie Lanté (artist) and Georges Jacques Gatine (engraver), Paris, 1827 See less
