TREASURES OF THE
Hermitage
Originally a "hermit's refuge" for
Catherine the Great, the Hermitage has grown to become one of the world's largest and most magnificent museums.
Housed in the splendid Winter Palace on the Neva River in St. Petersburg, the Hermitage collection spans twenty-two millennia, with treasures ranging from Paleolithic artifacts and Scythian gold articles to paintings by Old Masters and the renowned Impressionist and Post-Impressionist holdings of Shchukin and Morozov.
Two hundred fifty of the museum's finest works are presented in this stunning little volume, including masterpieces by such artists as Leonardo, Raphael, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Picasso, Cézanne, Monet, and Matisse.
VITALY A. SUSLoV is former director of the Hermitage Museum.
