One of Britain's greatest glass/crystal manufacturers who supplied the Titanic and 22,000 Stuart Crystal items to the Queen Mary in the glory years of Atlantic crossings. A royal warrant was issued to Stuart in 1909 by King Edward Xll.
The Stuart Crystal factory in Wales was located in Pengam, a village in South Wales. The company closed the Pengam plant in 1997, and moved production to Stourbridge, West Midlands, UK.
Stuart Crystal then became part of Waterford.
The owners/sellers personally purchased all their crystal tableware from the Pengam plant when they lived in Wales. Stuart Crystal allowed them to observe the artisans blow and hand-cut the elegant historic Hardwicke designs. It is rare to find a set of large Hardwicke crystal brandy glasses in such pristine condition. Truly a stunning set of brilliant crystal brandy crystal glasses; imagine yourself in the lounge of the Queen Mary.
Stuart Crystal’s history starts in 1827 when an 11 year old orphan, Frederick Stuart, was sent to work at Redhouse Glassworks on the Crystal Mile in Stourbridge, England.
Despite his fate and environment, the little Stuart learned glassmaking traditions of generations before he, along with Richard Mills and Edward & Thomas Webb formed their own firm in 1853 called Mills, Webb & Stuart. Frederick was so influential that by the time he passed away aged 82, the business was entirely dominated by his sons and him.
Stuart Crystal has made remarkable creations and can be credited with the making of the Stuart Medallion Cameo glass in 1887 and the Beaconsfield pattern in 1907, which is still used today. Stuart Crystal also produced magnificent Art Nouveau vases and bowls.
In 1995 the Waterford & Wedgwood Company bought Stuart Crystal but sadly in 2001 it was permanently closed
