An authentic 19th century Greek Orthodox icon depicting St. Luke the Evangelist, shown seated with his Gospel book and accompanied by the ox, his traditional symbol. Hand-painted in tempera on wood with gilt details, this icon reflects both Byzantine tradition and Western stylistic influence in its architectural background and finely rendered drapery.
The panel measures 17.5” H × 13” W × 1.5” D and is housed in a later carved gilt-accented frame. The back bears a Rose Frame Shop (Ferndale, Michigan) label dated 1964, confirming reframing for preservation.
Provenance & Attribution:
This work aligns with the production of 19th century Greek icon workshops, possibly from the Ionian Islands or mainland Greece. The Greek inscription (“Ο Άγιος Λουκάς”) and the ox symbol clearly identify the saint. Its larger size and rich detailing suggest it was intended as a devotional panel for private veneration. With documented reframing in 1964, the icon has been in the United States for at least six decades and owned by our family.
Condition: Good antique condition with surface craquelure, areas of wear, and minor losses consistent with age. Panel remains stable and ready for display. Please see photographs.
