This is a set of two Satsuma Moriage plates made in post WWII Japan. Satsuma is the region of Japan where the moriage technique was developed, and moriage is a technique of using slip porcelain clay to create a three dimensional raised effect with outlines, swirls, and dots. Liberal hand painted gold gilding completes the rich effect. Depicted is the Goddess Kannon and four Arhats. The Goddess Kannon is the compassionate Goddess of Mercy in Japanese Buddhism, and the Arhats are Buddha's devoted disciples who have achieved enlightenment and nirvana. The Arhats are venerated as sources of good luck and spiritual attainment.
These two plates have hand-applied moriage work and are completely hand painted so there are individual variations. The condition is very good, with no chips, cracks, crazing. The gold, paint, and 3D moriage slipware are all vibrant and in great condition. The paint on Kannon's blue robe has been slightly rubbed away, probably from stacking the plates on top of each other (see last photo for rub mark on lower robe). There is some very slight soiling of the thin unglazed edge of the bottom of the plate. The plates measure 7.25" diameter.
These plates would look beautiful hung on the wall and would make a wonderful gift for someone special.
