Born in San Francisco, Geoffrey Lewis enlisted in the Merchant Marines at the age of 16, becoming the youngest American to participate invasion of Saipan. He subsequently enlisted in the army and served in Germany. Back in the United States, he enrolled under the G.I. Bill, studying at the San Francisco Academy of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. He subsequently moved to New York where he received a scholarship to attend the Art Students League.
In the 1950s, Lewis worked as a television art director in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. By 1964, he had settled in San Francisco and dedicated himself fully to his painting and art career. His exhibited work focused on seascapes, mountains, rivers, and expansive skies, blending realism with atmospheric drama drawn from his wartime and maritime experiences.
Lewis exhibited widely and with success in San Francisco, including at the Maxwell, Pomeroy, and Conacher Galleries; in Los Angeles at the Biltmore; and at Zantman in Carmel, as well as in Dallas, Corpus Christi, and Memphis. In 1971, he was honored with a retrospective of his work at the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.
