Collector's Find: Pristine 1960s Turkish Obruk Dowry Kilim, Konya
This is an extraordinary opportunity to acquire a true piece of textile art and history: a 1960s Obruk Kilim from the Konya region of Turkey that is in unused, pristine condition. This exceptional flat-weave was hand-woven by Yörük (nomadic) villagers as a bridal dowry piece (çeyiz) and has been preserved in a chest (sandık) for over six decades—a rarity for a rug of this age.
Obruk kilims are highly prized by collectors and designers. They hold a prestigious Geographical Indication and are celebrated for their exceptionally fine, tight weave and sophisticated, traditional geometric designs. The quality of the construction and the vibrant saturation of the colors are a testament to the master weavers of Central Anatolia.
Artistry and Materials
Exceptional Condition: Unused/New Old Stock. This rug presents the dyes and texture as originally intended.
Materials: Expertly hand-woven with 100% Hand-Spun Wool.
Dyes: Features a rich palette of colors derived entirely from Natural (Vegetable) Dyes, which are known for their depth, luminosity, and superior aging properties.
Dimensions: 4 ft 6 in x 6 ft 7 in (Approx. 137 cm x 201 cm). A versatile size perfect for a living room anchor, dining space, or bedroom accent.
Design Appeal for the Modern Home
The striking geometric pattern and bold color combination of deep indigo, emerald green, and rich burgundy make this kilim a powerful statement piece.
It is perfectly suited for a wide range of sophisticated interiors:
Global/Eclectic: Its authenticity and cultural richness are a natural fit.
Mid-Century Modern: The abstract, angular design provides an organic contrast to the clean lines of MCM furniture.
High-End Rustic/Transitional: The natural wool and rich texture add warmth and history.
This Obruk Kilim is more than a floor covering; it is an investment-grade textile that carries the legacy of nomadic craftsmanship.
Detailed Color Palette
The distinct, naturally-dyed colors include:
Field Colors: Dominant Forest Green and Deep Indigo Blue create a rich, dark backdrop.
Accents: Vibrant Maroon/Burgundy Red frames the central elements, balanced by the high-contrast Natural Cream/Ivory defining the core zig-zag motif.
Minor Details: Small accents of light blue, black, and rust highlight the intricate border patterns.
