This is an exceptionally rare find: an authentic vintage Obruk kilim handwoven by the nomadic Yörük tribes in the Obruk district of Konya, Turkey, during the 1960s. This stunning flatweave rug is a genuine dowry (çeyiz) piece, woven by the villagers for a bride's hope chest and has remained unused and perfectly preserved for over fifty years.
Its pristine, never-used condition and traditional craftsmanship make it highly desirable for collectors and lovers of genuine folk art.
Key Features:
Authentic Obruk Provenance: Obruk kilims are internationally celebrated for their superior, fine weave and distinctive patterns, holding a Geographical Indication to protect their authenticity. They are exceedingly difficult to find, especially in this condition.
Premium Construction: This is a traditional wool-on-wool kilim, meaning it is entirely hand-spun and handwoven from 100% organic sheep's wool. The all-wool construction is a hallmark of the most traditional nomadic and village rugs.
Natural Dyes: All colors are derived exclusively from natural, plant-based dyes, giving the palette an unparalleled depth, rich saturation, and subtle color variations (abrash) that only improve with age.
Size: 5 ft 2 in x 6 ft 4 in (157 cm x 193 cm)—a versatile area rug size perfect for a living room, dining area, or bedroom.
This kilim is a true heirloom and a unique piece of woven history that will bring bold character, warmth, and a rich narrative to any interior space, from contemporary to bohemian.
About Obruk Kilims
Obruk kilims originate from the Central Anatolian steppes around the historical town of Obruk in the Konya region. They are one of the most recognized and sought-after types of Anatolian flatweave rugs. Woven primarily by Yörük (nomadic) and semi-nomadic villagers, Obruk kilims are characterized by a precise, high-quality flatweave technique and the frequent use of rich, natural dyes. Their designs often feature bold geometric motifs, large medallions, and traditional Anatolian symbols related to fertility, protection, and life cycles. The dedication of the weavers and the use of locally sourced, hand-processed materials elevate these pieces from simple floor coverings to genuine textile art.
Color Palette Description
The rug's color palette is a testament to its natural, organic dyes, which provide a nuanced and highly stable range of colors:
Deep Red/Burgundy: A powerful, rich red, likely obtained from madder root, symbolizing happiness, good fortune, and passion.
Indigo Blue/Navy: A deep, striking blue, traditionally extracted from the indigo plant, representing nobility, strength, and protection.
Forest Green: A dense, warm green, often derived from plants like spurge, symbolizing vitality, hope, and new life.
Warm Ivory/Cream: The natural, undyed wool color, used to create contrast and symbolize purity and peace.
Earthy Yellow/Mustard: A subdued, golden tone that adds warmth, often sourced from saffron or pomegranate skins, symbolizing wealth.
