Published in Louis Énault’s L’Amérique centrale et méridionale (Paris, 1867), the engraving was executed by Outhwaite after a drawing by Gustave Janet. The composition shows the cathedral’s façade and bell tower rising above the square, with intricate baroque detailing visible in the ornamented pediment and entrance. In front of the church, groups of figures in traditional attire gather and converse, while vendors with stalls and mounted riders animate the scene, capturing the lively atmosphere of San Salvador’s central plaza in the mid-19th century. Énault’s richly illustrated travel work introduced European readers to the architecture, culture, and daily life of Central and South America. This engraving blends architectural precision with ethnographic detail, reflecting both the religious heritage of Spanish colonialism and the everyday activities of the city’s inhabitants. Today, this print is valued not only as a historical document of El Salvador’s most prominent cathedral but also as an artwork that captures the character and spirit of a Central American city during a formative period in its history. Collectors of Latin American architecture, Central American history, and 19th-century travel illustrations will find it especially significant. Condition report: Very good condition. Light age-related toning and scattered foxing in the margins, not affecting the image. Strong impression. Blank verso. Please review images carefully. Framing tips: A wide ivory or cream mount will enhance the architectural detail and lively figures in the square. A dark wood frame complements the structure’s solidity, while a gilt frame emphasizes the baroque ornamentation of the façade. Double matting with a subtle terracotta or grey line could bring out the tones of stone and plaza. Technique: Engraving Maker: Gustave Janet (del.), Outhwaite (sc.), published in Paris, 1867 See less
