Published in Louis Énault’s L’Amérique centrale et méridionale (Paris, 1867), the engraving was executed by Outhwaite after a drawing by Lebreton. The composition captures Veracruz as seen from the Gulf of Mexico: the bustling harbor with tall-masted ships and smaller boats battling waves, the fortifications and lighthouse along the shoreline, and the town’s towers rising against the mountainous backdrop. The plume of smoke drifting from the volcano gives the scene a sense of natural drama, a reminder of the powerful forces that shaped the Mexican landscape. As the principal port of New Spain and later independent Mexico, Veracruz held enormous economic and strategic significance throughout the colonial and post-colonial periods. This engraving documents the city’s importance in the mid-19th century while appealing to the fascination of European readers for exotic landscapes, maritime activity, and dramatic natural settings. Collectors of Latin American history, maritime prints, and 19th-century travel engravings will find this view both historically rich and artistically compelling. It provides not only a snapshot of Veracruz in the 1800s but also a fine example of French travel illustration. Condition report: Very good condition with some light age-related toning and scattered foxing in the margins. The printed image remains crisp and clean. Blank verso. Please inspect images carefully. Framing tips: A wide ivory or cream mount will highlight the fine linework and contrasts between sea, city, and mountains. A dark wood or black frame adds strength and complements the maritime setting, while a gilt frame enhances the historic and decorative appeal. Double matting with a thin blue inner line could echo the sea and sky, creating depth in the presentation.
