Impressive 19th-century portrait engraving of s.m. Dom pedro ii, empereur du brésil, published in 1867. The emperor is depicted standing full-length in regal attire, wearing a richly embroidered ceremonial robe trimmed with ermine. A sash of state crosses his chest, and his right hand rests on a table beside the imperial crown, symbol of sovereignty. A heavy curtain forms the backdrop, emphasizing the grandeur of the scene. Engraved by nargeot and printed by ch. Chardon, paris, this portrait was part of a set of engravings devoted to brazil, produced for a european readership fascinated by the south american empire.
