Published in Louis Énault’s L’Amérique centrale et méridionale (Paris, 1867), the engraving forms part of the series of “Types Mexicains,” which illustrated the daily life, occupations, and costumes of Mexico for a European audience. The composition shows two barefoot men engaged in their work. On the left, the water carrier is heavily burdened, with a large water container strapped to his back and smaller jugs suspended from a wooden yoke across his shoulders. His posture emphasizes the sheer physical strain of his trade. On the right, the potter balances multiple clay vessels tied to his frame while holding one jug in his hand, an image of artisanal skill and endurance. Both wear simple working garments and hats suited to the Mexican climate. Engraved by Ferdinand Delannoy and printed by Chardon, the image captures with ethnographic detail the appearance, attire, and social role of these workers, while also appealing to the European fascination with the “types” of foreign lands. For collectors of Latin American history, ethnographic art, and 19th-century hand-colored prints, this engraving provides both documentary value and aesthetic charm. Condition report: Very good condition. Some light age-related toning and faint foxing in the margins, not affecting the printed image. Blank verso. Please review images carefully. Framing tips: This hand-colored engraving would look striking with a wide ivory or cream mat to accentuate the delicate colors. A natural wood or dark brown frame complements the earthy tones of the pottery, while a gilt frame brings a more refined decorative finish. Double matting with a subtle terracotta inner line would echo the hues of the clay vessels.
