A powerful and sculptural Raku-fired clay mask bowl by Gene Pearson (1946–2018), one of Jamaica’s most influential and celebrated ceramic artists. Titled “Guardian of Dreams,” this circular vessel features Pearson’s unmistakable stylized facial motif, carved with rhythmic geometric detailing and finished in a richly textured turquoise Raku glaze that shifts beautifully with light.
Executed in the 2000s, this work exemplifies Pearson’s mastery of Raku firing—embracing organic surface variation, depth, and soulful presence. Though unsigned, the piece is unmistakably his, closely aligned with documented works held in major collections and galleries. Additional Pearson works are available for stylistic reference.
Both functional and sculptural, this bowl commands attention as a centerpiece object or collector’s shelf work. Its expressive face and ceremonial presence evoke themes of protection, introspection, and ancestral memory—hallmarks of Pearson’s practice.
Artist & Legacy
Gene Pearson was a pioneering Jamaican ceramicist and sculptor, best known for his iconic heads and masks celebrating Black beauty, dignity, and cultural heritage. Inspired by ancient Nubia, Benin art, and Rastafarian philosophy, his work bridges tradition and modern expression. Pearson’s works reside in the National Gallery of Jamaica and in prominent private collections worldwide, and have been presented as official gifts to global heads of state.
Honored with Jamaica’s Order of Distinction and the Silver Musgrave Medal, Pearson’s legacy continues to grow in international demand, particularly for his Raku-fired ceramic works.
